Anzar continues winning ways in CAL with 61-37 victory over
Anchorpoint Christian on Monday night
GILROY
With four different girls putting up double-digit point totals, the Anzar High girls basketball team poured in their highest output of the season Monday night when it defeated host Anchorpoint Christian 61-37 in Gilroy.
Having lost nine of their first 10 contests to open the season, the Hawks are suddenly winners of three straight, and currently own a 2-0 record in the Coastal Athletic League.
Anzar is 4-9 overall.
Sydnee Masuen returned to the Anzar lineup and led the Hawks with 16 points Monday, while Alyssa Rodriguez had 12 points, five rebounds, five steals and three blocks.
Nicole Mello added 11 points and six rebounds for Anzar and teammate Kelsey Robledo pocketed 10.
Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said the third quarter, with the Hawks holding to a 33-24 lead, was a bit of a stalemate before the offensive onslaught in the final stanza.
Anzar scored 28 points in the fourth quarter – the most for a single quarter this season for the team – and cruised toward the 24-point victory behind a box-and-one defense, with the added defender guarding Anchorpoint’s senior forward Chelsey Urbanski.
“We exploded and got stronger toward the end,” Netzel said.
The 61 total points scored is also the most for Anzar this season. In fact, the Hawks’ previous high for a game came on Feb. 5 last season when Anzar defeated Anchorpoint 76-38.
The Hawks will now turn their attention to Pacific Collegiate, which could very well be their biggest competition in the CAL this season.
The two teams will meet Friday in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
