Jason Merz scores 13, pulls down 16 in Anzar’s 42-39 victory

Jason Merz scored 13 points and pulled down 16 rebounds and the Anzar High boys basketball team outlasted visiting Greenfield 42-39 on Friday for their first win of the season.
The Hawks, now 1-9 overall, are 1-1in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
Merz’ double-double performance included five blocks and two steals. Teammate Isaac Staley had 13 rebounds and six points, while both Mark Rania and Johnny Doty added eight points apiece.
Greenfield’s (1-9, 0-2 MTAL) Edgar Mares led all scorers with 15 points.
Anzar built their lead in the first half when it outscored Greenfield 9-2 in the first quarter, then 18-12 in the second to take a 27-14 lead to the break.
“The second quarter was a good quarter for us,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “We scored 18 points and broke the game open.
“They came back in the third quarter and made it interesting, but we held on.”
The Bruins’ 16-5 third period had them back in the contest with one quarter to go, but the two teams split even in the final stanza.
“We hung on and managed to win,” Cecena said.
The Hawks will return to MTAL play on Wednesday when they visit King City (4-10, 1-1 MTAL). Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
