series
The Hollister Downtown Association is sponsoring a summer movie
series that will run May 28 through Sept.3 every Thursday night (no
showing June 25) in the grassy lot at Fourth and San Benito
streets.
But they want the help of residents in deciding the summer movie
lineup. They have selected the first four movies, but the slots for
the last 10 weeks are still up for grabs. Choose your top three
from the list below, or write in your own favorite for
consideration (please include only movies that are G, PG, or
PG-13.)

Forrest Gump

In this winner of six Oscars, Tom Hanks plays the title role of Forrest Gump, a slow-witted man who still has the luck of ending up part of historical moments across the decades. Starring Sally Field as Mrs. Gump, Robin Wright Penn as Forrest’s love Jenny, and Gary Sinise as a Vietnam lieutenant.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

In this first film in the series, we are introduced to Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) as the two try to rescue Will’s love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from a dangerous sea captain who is living a cursed life.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) owes a debt to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). He uses the help of Will and Elizabeth once again to escape a traffic fate.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back with one final turn in the last movie of the triology based on a Disneyland ride. The crew, including Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) must sail off the edge of the globe to find Jack, but first they must fight a new enemy in the form of Sao Feng (Yun-Fat Chow).

E.T. – the Extra-terrestrial

In this 1982 classic directed by Steven Spielberg, three children (Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton and a very young Drew Barrymore) of a single mom bond together when the middle son, Elliott (Thomas), finds an extraterrestrial living in their shed. E.T. is a gentle alien who just wants to find a way to get back home.

Corpse Bride

In this stop-animation creation from Tim Burton, Victor Van Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp) is engaged to the lovely Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson). At their rehearsal, he messes up his vows and runs off into the words to practice. There as he is saying his vows, he awakens a bride (Helena Bonham Carter) who long since has been dead and who now believes they are married. Victor must decide between his finacee and his Corpse Bride.

Hairspray

Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) just wants a chance to dance on the Corny Collins show in this musical set in 1950s Baltimore. Her mother Edna (played by a cross-dressing John Travolta) wants her daughter to aim low, while father Wilbur Turnblad (Christopher Walken) encourages her to pursue her dreams of dancing on an integrated show with whites and blacks alike. Starring Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer and Amanda Bynes.

Sound of Music

Maria (Julie Andrews) takes a job working for a naval officer widower in this musical set in Austria during WWII. She endures the tricks of his seven children and wins them over with song. Also starring Christopher Plummer and Eleanor Parker.

Finding Nemo

When clownfish Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould) goes missing, his father Marlin (Albert Brooks) must find him. He heads out on an adventure with a forgetful fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) in this Pixar animated movie.

Ghost Busters

They ain’t afraid of no ghosts in this 1984 comedy starring Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis as the three out-of-work parapsychologists decide to set up a ghost removal company. Starring Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett and Rick Moranis (Louis Tully).

Nacho Libre

Nacho (Jack Black) grew up in an orphanage and now works as a cook there. But all his life he has dreamed of being a masked wrestler in the lucha libre tradition. He enters a tournament to win the respect of others and to help the children at the orphanage. Starring Ana de la Reguera as Sister Enarnacion and Darius Rose as Chancho.

Willow

In this 1988 fantasy film by George Lucas, Willow (Warwick Davis) must protect a baby princess from an evil queen (Jean Marsh). Starring Val Kilmer as Madmartigan and Joanne Whalley as Sorsha.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley) discovers a door to a magical world one day while she plays hide and seek with her siblings. The four children soon find themselves in Narnia where a prophecy has told that two sons of Adam and two sons of Eve will help the mighty lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson) defeat an evil witch (Tilda Swinton). Starring Skandar Keynes, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell as Lucy’s siblings.

Shrek

A grumpy ogre (voiced by Mike Meyers) finds himself on a quest to save a princess with a mouthy Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy), all in the hopes of keeping his solitude in a swamp. But Shrek doesn’t realize the beautiful Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz) has a secret that will draw them together in this animated film.

Night at the Museum

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is a little bit of a loser when he takes a job as a night security guard at the Museum of Natural History. But he soon discovers that not all is what it seems as the animals and exhibits come to life one night. Starring Owen Wilson as Jedediah, Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt and Rami Malek as Ahkmenrah.

Madagascar

Animals living in the Central Park Zoo in New York decide to escape to the wilds of Madagascar in this animated film. Voices by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

The New York zoo animals decide to leave the island of Madagascar only to find themselves in the wild of Africa, where Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller) meets his family but has trouble communicating with them after a pampered life in a cage. Other voices by Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) goes from being an ordinary boy who lives with a neglectful aunt and uncle to one with an extraordinary destiny in the first movie from the series. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he finds a place he finally belongs.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

In the second movie of the series, Hogwarts is plagued by mysterious attacks on the school. Harry is haunted by a voice and tries to find the truth behind the attacks.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

A convicted murderer (Gary Oldman) has escaped from prison and is after Harry (Danielle Radcliffe). He and his friends Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) must save themselves, and Hogwarts, from danger.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is selected to compete in a dangerous wizardry competition that is usually reserved for older students. The school is host to visitors from two other Wizard schools, and Voldemort’s presence is becoming more apparent.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The Harry Potter saga continues with the fifth story in the series. Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe) return to Hogwarts isn’t as good as it usually as no believes the warnings that Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is back. He has a new defense against the dark arts teacher to deal with and is having dreams he can’t explain.

Mamma Mia!

All Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) wants before she gets married is to have her father walk her down the aisle but her mother (Meryl Streep) has always been secretive about her past. When Sophie finds an old diary she decides to invite all three of her mother’s beaus to the island hotel they run in Greece so she can discover which is the real deal in this musical inspired by the music of ABBA. Starring Stellan Skarsgard, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Professor Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) is obsessed with the idea that there is a lost world at the center of the earth. When he and his nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) travel to Iceland to research some mysterious quakes they find themselves lost in just such a world with their guide Hannah (Anita Briem). But now that Trevor has made his discovery, how will they find their way out?

Bee Movie

Barry B. Benson (voiced by Jerry Seinfeld) wants more from life than collecting honey and pollinating flowers so he escapes from the hive for a visit to Manhattan. There he makes friends with a florist named Vanessa (Renee Zellweger.)

Over the Hedge

RJ (Bruce Willis) is a raccoon who wants things the easy way. He persuades a group of forest friends that they can find food by scavenging from humans rather than by hunting and gathering in the woods. Voices by Garry Shandling, Steve Carell and Wanda Sykes.

Twilight

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is an ordinary teenager when she finds herself in an extraordinary relationship after moving to a sleepy Washington town with her father. She finds herself attracted to the gorgeous Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), but there is something about him that isn’t quite right – he’s a vampire.

Kung Fu Panda

Po the Panda (voiced by Jack Black) wants to be a kung-fu master, but mostly he is just good at making noodle bowls. Po finds himself in the midst of the Furious Five when he is chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy. The other kung-fu masters don’t want him around, but their guru Master Shifu (voiced by Dustin Hoffman) encourages him to believe in himself.

Sponsorships needed

Some of the funding for the 14-week movie series comes from the Hollister Redevelopment Agency. The RDA members approved $20,000 to help cover the cost of renting a 25-foot by 15-foot inflatable movie screen and the licensing fees to show the movies in public. The estimated cost for the series is $40,000, and the HDA is soliciting sponsorships from the community.
