Behind Marcus Synegal’s 2-under 34, San Benito records 185 at
TCAL Tournament
HOLLISTER
It was a score, and a finish, nearly two years in the making for the San Benito High boys golf team.
After taking runner-up to Palma in every single Tri-County Athletic League Tournament last season, and in two tournaments already this season, the Haybalers finally broke through on Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister, where they tied the Chieftains for first place with a 185.
It was the lowest score compiled by San Benito this season, and nine strokes better than the team’s lowest score (194) last season.
“They’re having fun,” ‘Baler head coach Reggie Synegal said. “They know they just hung strong with one of the best teams out there.
“We’re right where we need to be.”
Haybaler Marcus Synegal medaled the par-36 front nine of the Gabilan Course with a 2-under 34 on Thursday, leading San Benito and everybody else, for that matter. Reggie Synegal said Marcus was 4-under at one point, but a double bogey brought the second-year player back to his front-nine 34 – still the best score of the day.
“I like the way he stood strong,” said Reggie Synegal, who added that teammate Will Cross carded a 1-under 35.
“Cross played awesome once again,” added Synegal, who mentioned the par-3 ninth hole, where Cross was said to have sunk a 40-foot putt.
“He drained it for a birdie.”
San Benito’s Nathan Winn shot a 36 for par on Thursday, while Joey Amaral delivered a strong score of 38 for the ‘Balers. Derell Aton and Blake Stephens rounded out San Benito with matching 42’s.
Thursday’s round further strengthened the belief the TCAL is a two-team race between Palma and San Benito, as third-place Salinas finished well behind the top two teams in the league with a 214.
Everett Alvarez, meanwhile, compiled a 226, Gilroy a 225 and Alisal a 271 to round out the TCAL Tournament.
