Scholarships abound for South County’s graduating seniors
Time sure does fly when your having fun; June has arrived and
summer is right around the corner. I don’t know where the time
goes. Graduations will start taking place and kids will be out of
school for the summer. I hope you have something to do to keep your
kids busy this summer!

Time sure does fly when your having fun; June has arrived and summer is right around the corner. I don’t know where the time goes. Graduations will start taking place and kids will be out of school for the summer. I hope you have something to do to keep your kids busy this summer!

A huge congratulations goes out to all of the King City High School students who were honored at the scholarship dinner last Thursday night at the Orradre Building at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. So many students were honored and presented with 77 scholarships that totaled more than $170,000.00. Wow, that is amazing – I just love this community and all that it does to support its youth. Rory Johnsen (our nephew, we’re just a little proud), earned 12 scholarships – the most awarded that night – for a total of $13,000. Way to go, Rory. Your cousins are all looking up to you (again)! Rory will be putting the scholarships to good use as he will be attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo next fall. Bitterwater alumna Carolyn Madson received several scholarships, as did Mattie Barrington. Congratulations to all students who received a scholarship. You’re all an amazing bunch of kids and you deserve the best.

Birthday wishes go out to Jo Ellen Johnsen who celebrated her birthday on May 24, and to Lynette Hurley who celebrated on May 26.

Students from Bitterwater Tully School, Panoche School and Jefferson Elementary School spent last Thursday and Friday on a science field trip at the Pinnacles National Monument. Several students even camped out on Thursday night. This was a pilot program for the Pinnacles, and by all indications, it was a success so hopefully they will continue on with the program in the future. The kids had a great time and made many new friends from other schools.

Kathy Garcia hosted May’s hot lunch at Bitterwater School last Wednesday. Some of those stopping by to enjoy lunch with the students included Jeff and Jean Schmidt, Laurence and Donna Hansen, Vern Scattini and Lynette Hurley.

Many graduations will be taking place within the next few weeks, so if you have any graduation news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
