A fire Tuesday evening off Panoche Road destroyed a shed in which propane tanks and ammunition caused explosions and the blaze to briefly spread to the grass around the structure, fire officials said.

The fire started shortly before 5 p.m. in the 9300 block of Panoche Road, while firefighters extinguished it in about 30 minutes, said Mike Marlow, battalion chief of the county fire department.

The chief explained that the explosions caused some vegetation to ignite, but it did not spread far. Calfire also responded while using a helicopter to drop water, he said.

The fire likely was caused by someone using a torch in the shed, which was made of heavy-duty plastic with a wood floor.

One of the residents of the property also lost horse saddles and farm equipment.
