Lights out, for now, at Brothers
If you hadn’t noticed, the lights are out and the doors are
locked at Brothers Market at the corner of South and San Benito
streets. But the store isn’t necessarily closed for good.
The city building department, upon urging from the county health
department, red-tagged the store about two weeks ago, which means
it cannot operate until its water and electricity is up and
running, said city Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless, who
also acts as airport manager.

The city building department, upon urging from the county health department, red-tagged the store about two weeks ago, which means it cannot operate until its water and electricity is up and running, said city Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless, who also acts as airport manager.
As Chambless understood, health department officials became worried when the water and electricity had been shut off. A city building department official went to the location and also noticed when he arrived Brothers had been using an electrical generator inside the store, which is disallowed.
“The building’s not damaged,” Chambless said. “It’s just we can’t have them running generators inside the building.”
