A jacket and shirt taken from a customer by a store clerk has
helped potentially identify a suspect in a beer skip at the Quik
Stop on Wednesday. The suspect grabbed two 18-packs of beer and
left the store without paying. But the clerk saw the man doing it
and chased after him, grabbing his jacket, which made the man drop
the beer. Before the man got away, the clerk grabbed a jacket that
contained his cell phone, according to police.
A jacket and shirt taken away by a store clerk has helped potentially identify a suspect in a beer skip at the Quik Stop on Wednesday.
At 11:26 p.m., a Salinas man walked into the Quik Stop on the 100 block of San Felipe Road and took a lap around the store, said Officer Rosie Betanio, a Hollister police spokeswoman.
The suspect then grabbed two 18-packs of beer and left the store without paying. But the clerk saw the man doing it and chased after the suspect, grabbing his jacket, which made the man drop the beer, Betanio said. The clerk detained the suspect for a short while outside, but then a vehicle pulled into the parking lot and the suspect quickly ran toward the car, identified as a maroon Chrysler 300.
As the suspect was running away, the clerk again grabbed his coat, police said. He detained him for a second time, but the driver got out of the car and took a swing at the clerk. He missed, but the clerk managed to get the jacket and the shirt from the suspect, according to police. The suspect got into the car with the driver and drove away.
While all this was happening, another clerk called police, Betanio reported.
Inside a pocket in the jacket, police found the suspect’s cell phone, which has helped police in seeking out the suspect.
The case has been forwarded to the San Benito County District Attorney’s Office.
