The Hollister Headhunters 10U travel baseball team continued its winning ways last week with another victory at the Slugfest tournament in Manteca on Aug. 29-30.

In the tournament opener, the Headhunters easily handled the Los Banos Bulldogs 8-0 in five innings behind the arm of Izzak Olejnik, who allowed just a single hit in the contest. The offense, meanwhile, was highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance from Sammy Vicencio and a two-RBI triple from Matt Hill.

In the second game, the Headhunters could only salvage a tie against a stubborn Monterey Bay team, which allowed only three runs on seven hits. The runs were earned in part thanks to key hits from Isaiah Bueno and Davonte Butler.

Earning the No. 1 seed in Sunday’s semifinal match-up, the Headhunters faced the Walnut Creek Cobras. The Cobras were no match, however, as Hollister pounded out 10 hits in just two innings en route to a 15-0 win, which eliminated Walnut Creek from contention. The 15-run onsluaght was highlighted by the hot hitting of Drew Williams and Tim Manderson, each of whom recorded four RBIs apiece.

The easy victory over Walnut Creek advanced Hollister to the championship game, where it met the Hard 90 Pastime. The bats remained hot as the Headhunters sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored eight runs, including a three-RBI double from Derek Moeller and 2-for-2 performances by Nico Lopez and Zach Mata.

After it tacked on three more runs in the second, the Headhunters easily handled the Pastime 12-2 in just four innings to claim the Slugfest title.

The Manteca tournament was the Headhunters’ final tournament in the 10-and-under age category. Over the course of the season, Hollister compiled a record that included nine first-place finishes and two second-place finishes in 12 tournaments.
