Despite no time to warm up, the San Benito High girls water polo team defeated visiting Notre Dame 10-3 Thursday at the Salinas Aquatic Center.

The victory improves the Lady Balers to 10-6 overall on the season, 5-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

San Benito didn’t have any time to warm up prior to the match after it initially traveled to Hartnell College instead. Not realizing Notre Dame plays its home matches at the Salinas Aquatic Center, the Lady Balers piled back into the bus and arrived at the Spirits’ home site just before match time.

“We just jumped in and started to play without warming up,” San Benito head coach Hayley Vandercook said.

The lack of warm-up allowed Notre Dame to keep the match close early on, as it trailed the Lady Balers 3-2 after one quarter. But San Benito, behind a three-goal effort from Demi Gatrell, outscored the Spirits by a 7-1 margin for the remainder of the match.

Caitlin Schafer, Hannah Smith and Amanda Virak each added two goals apiece, while Lyndsay De La Torre deposited one goal.

San Benito will host Santa Catalina Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
