The San Benito High girls volleyball team compiled a 2-3 record at the Menlo Invitational last Saturday, a tournament the Lady Balers went 0-5 in one year ago.

San Benito head coach Dean Askanas said his team defeated Menlo to open the tournament, although scores were not reported at press time.

“The win over Menlo was great,” Askanas said. “It was big because they beat us in the preseason.”

Menlo defeated San Benito in three games (25-15, 25-23, 25-14) on Sept. 17.

The Lady Balers continued tournament play on Saturday when they defeated Mount Pleasant in two games (25-23, 25-19) behind 16 assists and 10 digs from Alisha Cornick.

Emily Tonascia had nine kills, while Sam Klauer and Sara Yamasaki chimed in with 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Raelynn Heredia added 11 digs.

San Benito ended the tournament with three losses, however. The Lady Balers lost to Aragon in two games (16-25, 17-25); Menlo-Atherton in three games (25-20, 18-25, 12-15); and Palo Alto in three games (11-25, 25-20, 5-15).

Cornick had 18 assists against Menlo-Atherton, though, while the Lady Balers racked up 74 digs as a team. Dig leaders included Klauer (19), Heredia (16), Mari Vallejo (15) and Yamasaki (10).

Klauer added 11 digs against Palo Alto.

San Benito, which is now 12-11 overall, will return to Tri-County Athletic League play Tuesday night when it hosts Gilroy.

Match time is 6:30 p.m.
