Hollister police officials are in talks with San Benito High School about taking over the school resource officer position on the campus.
Police Chief David Westrick told Hollister council members Thursday night that the police department is in talks with the high school, which would fund half of the position.
Currently, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office provides an SRO position, with the high school partnering on the funding, but the law enforcement agency has indicated it will no longer provide the officer.
The sheriff’s office has been undergoing a significant transformation in recent years with layoffs and now hiring to make up for the losses.
The city currently provides two school resource officers for the Hollister School District. Westrick told council members the SROs next year would put much of their focus on traffic enforcement around the schools.
