Trailing 17-9 at halftime against host North Monterey County, San Benito head coach David Kaplansky challenged his team in the locker room.
“Our identity was going to come out,” Kaplansky said of the third and fourth quarters. “And I think they came out great in the second half.”
Opening the third quarter on an 8-0 run, the Lady Balers tied the game at 17-all and kept the tempo up en route to a 43-31 victory over North County Tuesday night in Castroville.
Victoria Aguilera scored 13 points to lead San Benito, which improves to 2-0 on the early season.
“It was a good learning experience, for our kids to play from behind on the road,” Kaplansky said.
San Benito fell behind after a rough first half. The Condors held a narrow 8-7 lead after one quarter, but outscored the Lady Balers 9-2 in the second to take an eight-point lead to the break.
But a rejuvenated San Benito team came out in the second half. Down eight points at the beginning of the third quarter, San Benito’s Erin Glasspool hit consecutive 3-pointers and Aguilera converted a transition lay-up to knot the game at 17-all, less than a minute into the second half.

Down by one point with 3.4 seconds remaining against Fremont of Sunnyvale on Tuesday night, San Benito’s Eric Elayda nailed a baseline jumper, was fouled in the process, and drained the ensuing free throw to lift the Balers past Fremont 48-46 at the Independence Fukishima Invitational in San Jose.
The last-second heroics by Elayda, who had six points in the contest, improves San Benito to 3-1 on the year.
“He did a great job to get open,” San Benito head coach Tracy Carpenter said. “Cooper Sepulveda passed it to him and … he caught the ball really quickly, turned and shot.”
Sepulveda led San Benito with 10 points, while Evan Olbring had nine and Jordan Belton added eight.

Santa Cruz flexed its muscle to the tune of five first-half goals and never looked back on Tuesday when it defeated visiting San Benito 5-1 in a non-conference match.
The loss drops the Lady Balers to 0-2 on the early season.
“Santa Cruz showed up, but we never did,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “It was just not a good day today. They were flat.”

Anzar’s Kelsey Robledo had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds against Carmel on Tuesday night in San Juan Bautista, but the visiting Padres clamped down on the rest of the Hawks basketball team en route to a 57-23 victory in non-conference play.
Britteny Doty supplied Anzar’s other point after going 1 of 2 from the free throw line.
The Hawks have lost two straight since opening the season with two victories, and currently own a 2-2 record. Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel was unavailable for comment at press time.
