SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
The Anzar High boys basketball team picked up its first victory of the early season on Friday when it defeated visiting Latino College Prep 62-24 in non-conference action in San Juan Bautista.
Led by junior Andres Gomez’ 23 points, the Hawks jumped out to an 18-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Mark Rania deposited 18 points for Anzar, which led 34-6 at halftime on Friday.
Saturday’s contest against Downtown College Prep was a much closer match-up for the Hawks, who couldn’t keep pace with Prep late in the game and lost 59-55.
Rania and Gomez combined to score 45 of Anzar’s 55 points in the game, with Rania scoring 25 and Gomez tacking on 20 more.
“They just wore us down,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said.
The Hawks led 15-6 after one quarter, and even 31-24 at halftime. But Downtown College Prep outscored Anzar 33-24 in the second half.
The Hawks are now 1-4 overall.
Anzar will open the San Jose Bulldog Invitational on Wednesday at San Jose High Academy. The Hawks will square off against Gunderson at 4:30 p.m.
