Behind double-digit performances from Eric Elayda and Kyle Vallejo, the San Benito boys basketball team defeated Woodside Priory 66-43 in a consolation match on Saturday at the 16th annual Coach Wilson Memorial Tournament in Pebble Beach.

The Balers finished in fifth place.

After falling to Yuba City’s River Valley by a 64-58 margin to open the tournament last week, the Balers rebounded to defeat Liberty of Brentwood 58-50 before trumping Woodside Priory on Saturday at Robert Louis Stevenson School.

“The team made much progress during the tournament,” first-year head coach Tracy Carpenter said.

Sophomore Jordan Belton, who had a team-high 15 points against Liberty, and Elayda, who pocketed 25 against River Valley, were named to the all-tournament team.

Elayda, a junior guard, also deposited a team-high 15 points on Saturday to lead the Balers past Woodside Priory. Senior captain Kyle Vallejo added 12 points in the victory.

Cooper Sepulveda delivered an all-around performance when he scored nine points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished off four assists.

The Balers led 25-10 after one quarter of play, with each player seeing floor time in both halves, Carpenter said.

San Benito will open the Independence Fukishima Invitational on Tuesday in San Jose. The Balers (2-1) will open the tournament against Fremont of Sunnyvale at 5 p.m.
