Live Oak deposited the game’s lone goal in the 75th minute and narrowly defeated the San Benito girls soccer team 1-0 Tuesday in the 2009 season opener in Morgan Hill.
The Lady Balers, who lost to the Acorns by a 3-1 margin last season, were knotted in a scoreless tie at halftime with the Morgan Hill school. But despite posting some 16 shots on net in the game, San Benito couldn’t find the equalizer.
“We lost, but the performance of our team was phenomenal,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “I thought we really outplayed them.”
Alvarez said Live Oak only mustered four shots on goal, but the Acorns managed to pocket the game-winner with just five minutes remaining in regulation when a shot on goal deflected off a player and into the net.
“We just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Alvarez said. “But a very well-played game. I’m very pleased with it.”
San Benito (0-1) will visit Santa Cruz next Tuesday. Kick-off is 3:30 p.m.
