The Anzar High girls basketball team easily won its 2009 opener against Kehillah Jewish High 42-17 on Tuesday night, keeping the private Palo Alto school to single-digit point totals during each quarter of play.

Kelsey Robledo led all scorers, and even single-handedly outscored Kehillah by herself, when she deposited 20 points to lead Anzar, which improves to 1-0 on the early season.

“It was a good first game,” Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said. “I have a lot of new faces and different challenges this year.”

One new face was junior Melissa Weckerle, a transfer from Soquel, who dished out five assists to go along with 18 points behind 8 of 10 shooting. Weckerle added a pair of rebounds and eight steals in her debut for the Hawks.

“She played outstanding,” Netzel said. “And Kelsey (Robledo) was the perfect balance. Kelsey on the inside and Melissa on the outside.”

Anzar controlled a 9-3 lead after one quarter and a 24-9 lead at halftime, and coasted through the second half toward its first win. The Hawks, who although have won consecutive titles in the Coastal Athletic League, struggled through non-conference play last season, earning just one win in its first 10 games.

Netzel noted the play of freshmen Britteny Doty and Delaney McKinney on Tuesday night, who combined for five rebounds, four assists and five steals in their first varsity action.

The Hawks, meanwhile, will return to action on Thursday in their home opener against Saint Lawrence Academy of Santa Clara. Tip-off is 6 p.m., in San Juan Bautista.
