Alyssa Rodriguez scores 30 points, Anzar routs Marina 64-11
San Juan Bautista – Alyssa Rodriguez dropped 30 points and Carly Johnson added 13 as the Anzar girls basketball team defeated Marina in a 64-11 drubbing Thursday in San Juan Bautista.

With a 2-6 preseason behind them, the Hawks suddenly find themselves undefeated at 2-0 in the Coastal Athletic League after Tuesday’s easy 62-24 win over Georgiana Bruce Kirby.

Against Marina, the Hawks racked up 29 steals, and even held the Mariners (0-4, O-2 CAL) to zero points in the second quarter.

“There were a lot of steals, a lot of fast-breaking,” said coach Aaron Netzel, whose Anzar team started the game with a half-court trap. “We did man-to-man, trap, we did everything. We couldn’t go wrong, whatever we did … We were really aggressive.”

Rodriguez, Johnson and Liliana Resendez each made seven steals in the game, and Nicole Mello added four.

Emily Anderson and Resendez each had seven points, while Kristina Pavese had four and Camille Merz had three points and four rebounds.

“It’s really good for the girls,” Netzel said. “With the tough preseason, it’s paying dividends now.”

After two lopsided wins, Anzar has already pushed themselves out to a lead in the CAL, with Pacific Collegiate (3-5, 1-0 CAL) appearing to be the main competition for the Hawks.

“It looks like the team that will be the most competitive is Pacific Collegiate,” Netzel said. “If I had to pick one team, I’d think that is the team to look out for.”

Before they get a chance to take on Pacific Collegiate, though, Anzar will need to battle Anchorpoint Tuesday. The Warriors have only played one game this season – a 48-19 loss to Greenfield.

The game will be held at South Valley Junior High in Gilroy. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
