Waging war on freedom, peace

Ever hear of an Adopt-A-Highway sign of sturdy 4-by-6 timbers smashed and knocked down? While you are thinking about that possibility, let me tell you what happened.

Only three days after Christmas on Dec. 28, our Adopt-A –Highway sign was smashed and knockd down. Cal Trans replaced it immediately. Again on Jan. 8, there was a repeat destruction. Cal Trans will replace it. Who knows what will happen again in a few days?

The sign, which suffers from this repeated fury is one displaying the name of our group, whose members clean the highway each month. We are the Hollister Peace Vigil. This sign is located across the highway from Cedar House Cafe, formerly known as the Sugar Plum Restaurant. Yes, we are the same group that holds our peace signs on street corners around Hollister each week, rain or sine. Now we faithfully clean the highway from the Santa Clara County line to Fairview Road.

So there you have it. I thought we were a free country. But there seems to be a war on freedom and volunteer activity.
