Lady ‘Balers overcome two-goal deficit, but can’t overcome
Salinas in 3-2 loss
Salinas – The San Benito girls soccer team couldn’t make up any ground in the Tri-County Athletic League Standings Wednesday after they were edged by host Salinas 3-2.

The Lady ‘Balers sit in second place in the TCAL with a 3-2-1 record now, but could have gained ground on first-place Gilroy, which tied Alisal 1-1 Wednesday.

“It was just one of those nights,” coach Mike Schurig said. “We had several shots that went wide or hit the goal post. It was just one of those nights.

“We’re in second place. We’re really gonna have to do well in the last six games to solidify that.”

Playing in “miserable” conditions with heavy rains, Schurig said, San Benito struggled to capitalize on scoring chances and compounded that with costly mistakes that led to “goal-shooting” opportunities for Salinas.

“We out-shot them, out-passed them, we just dominated them,” said Schurig, whose San Benito squad out-shot Salinas 20-12 for the game, 12-2 in the first half. “But we couldn’t get a goal in. We couldn’t finish.”

Both teams were held scoreless through the first half, but the Cowboys put two quick scores on the board in the 45th and 55th minutes to take a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The Lady ‘Balers responded, though, when Hannah Cobb deposited a goal in the 65th minute on an assist from Samantha Moreno. Later, in the 70th minute, San Benito tied the game when JC Clayton pocketed a goal on an assist from Yaira Lizarraga.

Salinas, however, found the back of the net in the 74th minute for the game-winning score.

“With the 2-2 tie, we just couldn’t get the game-winner,” Schurig said.

The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak for San Benito, which will face Notre Dame at Palma High School in Salinas on Friday. The junior varsity squad will play Notre Dame at North Salinas High School.

Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
