Hawks rout Santa Cruz Waldorf, take first in CAL
The Anzar Hawks avenged a loss from earlier this season when they defeated Santa Cruz Waldorf 52-11 Thursday in San Juan Bautista.

As a result of the win, the Hawks will not only be crowned champions of the Coastal Athletic League, but they’ll advance to the Central Coast Section playoffs for the first time in school history.

Anzar ends their regular season with a 12-7 overall record, 10-1 in the CAL.

“You couldn’t script it better,” coach Aaron Netzel said. “You talk about wanting it more; they just wanted it more, a lot more.”

Anzar’s single league loss came in a 52-49 defeat at Santa Cruz Waldorf on Jan. 24.

On Thursday, Anzar nearly held Waldorf to a single-digit point total, while Hawk Alyssa Rodriguez single-handedly outscored the Santa Cruz team with 15 points.

Carly Johnson had 11.

Kristina Pavese, the lone senior on Anzar, celebrated Senior Night with perhaps her best game of the season. Pavese scored eight points, pulled down nine boards and added seven steals.

A loss by Anzar Thursday would have sent the CAL into a chaotic state, where three teams would have been tied for first place.

“I’m so proud of my girls,” Netzel said.

The Hawks will now await their seeding for next week’s CCS playoffs. Seeding meetings are slated for Saturday.
