Haybalers drop three games in season opener
San Francisco

The San Benito boys volleyball team started their 2008 season on a sour note Tuesday in San Francisco, as they dropped three games to Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep 25-20, 25-16, 25-19.

Coach Luis Espinoza said last week’s winter vacation perhaps had an affect on the team, as the Haybalers didn’t practice with a full squad until Monday.

“We just didn’t play well. I think we played our worst game of the season,” Espinoza said. “But that’s how things go with a break in between … I think the worst is behind us. We’re a better team than last year, talent wise.”

Sacred Heart was runner-up in the 2006 Central Coast Section playoffs.

No statistics were provided.

On Thursday, the ‘Balers will continue their preseason schedule at Willow Glen at 7 p.m. San Benito will have their home opener on March 4 against Gunderson, and will then play at Westmont on March 7 before their league opener against Gilroy.

“I know with the team that we have right now,” Espinoza said, “I know we can do better.”
