Nathan Winn and Will Cross led the way with scores of 2-over 37 and the San Benito boys golf team took second place at the first Tri-County Athletic League Tournament of the season Thursday at the Gilroy Golf Club.

The Haybalers compiled a team score of 201 and finished behind Palma, which took the top spot with a 188. Salinas and Gilroy finished in third and fourth place with team scores of 209 and 216, respectively.

Assistant coach Sal Felice said his team did okay in their first TCAL tournament, and believes the ‘Balers can compete with the Chieftains for league supremacy.

“I was very pleased that they stayed in and tried on every shot. That pleased me more than anything; moreso than the results,” Felice said. “One shot can make the difference between second and third place. We really stressed on not giving up on any shots.”

Palma’s Matthew Ogden medaled the par-35 Gilroy Golf Club with an even score of 35.

For San Benito, Marcus Synegal carded a 41 and Justin Palmquist shot a 42. Joey Amaral finished his round with a 44, and Derell Aton completed his day with a 45.

Outside of the top four teams, Alisal finished fifth with a 223 and Everett Alvarez were three strokes behind with a 226.

San Benito will have another chance on Monday, as the second TCAL Tournament will take place at the Corral De Tierra Country Club in Salinas. Tee time is 3 p.m.
