Cancer Society recognizes locals

SALINAS – The American Cancer Society held its “Round Up to thank our Volunteer Partners” on May 21 at the Pasadera Country Club in Monterey. The recognition event thanked Society volunteers and donors from San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties who make a positive difference for the Society as well as for cancer patients and their families.

– The Collaboration Award was presented to Hazel Hawkins Hospital for on-going support of American Cancer Society programs and services.

– Chuck Obeso-Bradley of Hollister was honored with the Patient Courage Award. Obeso-Bradley continued his volunteer work as Relay For Life Co-Chair while he battled his own cancer.

– The Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award went to Carol Johnson of Hollister. Ten years ago, Johnson was the inaugural chair for the Relay For Life of Hollister and has continued to support the event ever since. Not only has Carol been instrumental in the success of the Hollister Relay, she serves on San Benito County Leadership Council, has participated in many State Legislative Days in Sacramento, and as a Legislative Ambassador she participated in Celebration on the Hill in 2002 and 2006 in Washington, D.C. Carol’s wonderful leadership has brought together an entire community to focus on stomping out cancer here and everywhere.

“Volunteers are the backbone of the American Cancer Society,” said Barbara Wakeley, Regional Vice President. “I want to thank each of our nearly 1,000 volunteers here in the Central Coast for giving their time and energy to our cancer-fighting mission. Our volunteers impact the community in ways that could not be done without their personal commitment.”

More than 2 million volunteers and supporters across the country help the American Cancer Society work to achieve its life-saving mission. Volunteers in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties contribute to the cancer fight through a variety of roles, efforts and programs including:

– Cancer Resource Network– Specially trained staff assist cancer patients and their caregivers by providing specialized, high quality support, guidance and referral to other resources 24-hours a day, seven days a week through 1.800.ACS.2345.

– Legislative advocacy – The Society’s grassroots volunteer network of 280,000 volunteers successfully works to send strong messages to lawmakers about issues that matter to people touched by cancer. Currently local volunteers are collecting signatures to put a tobacco tax on the November ballot.

– Relay For Life –The Relays in Salinas, Watsonville, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Marina, Hollister and North Monterey County create a place where volunteer teams celebrate survivorship, remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, and work to raise much-needed funds to fuel the fight against cancer More than three million Americans (including 500,000 cancer survivors) participate nationally in the Society’s signature overnight community event.

GOP committee meets

HOLLISTER – The June meeting of the San Benito County Republican Party will be Thursday, June 5. The location will be the San Benito County Library on Fifth Street in Hollister.

Red Cross month

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The San Juan Bautista City Council recently proclaimed May as American Red Cross Heroes Month in the city.

Student wins Washington trip

HOLLISTER – Aaron Lucas, a student at Marguerite Maze Middle School, was recently accepted to the People to People World Leadership Forum. Lucas will join students in Washington, D.C., Sept. 22-28 to earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring the nation’s capital.

Lucas will examine the characteristics of American leadership. Delegates also will participate in small-group discussions and exercises to experience first-hand how leaders develop strategies, and foster change.

Lucas was accepted for the honor based on scholarship, civic involvement and leadership potential.

YMCA day camp registration starts

HOLLISTER – YMCA of San Benito County is taking registration for Y Day Camp this summer. Staff will work with children on group games, arts and crafts, swimming, sports, nature walks and a variety of well-planned field trips. Campers entering grades 1 through 8 can enjoy 10 one-week sessions of Day Camp from June 9 through August 15.

Teens in grades 9 through 10 can participate in the leader in training program, which helps prepare them to enter the work force.

This summer students can also particpate in a British soccer camp for ages 3 to 7. The camp will be offered July 14-18 and Aug. 4 – 8.
