The California Department of Education released the 2007 base Academic Performance Index report to show where local schools rank statewide and with others similar in size to them. The goal set by the state each year is 800.

Cerra Vista School experienced the biggest increase in the Hollister School District with a 65-point jump. It’s also the only school in Hollister to exceed the 800 goal, with a total of 850 points. Marguerite Maze Middle School also saw a sizable increase of 27 points.

Calaveras Elementary, meanwhile, was the only school in the Hollister district to drop from 2006 to 2007. In 2006, Calaveras had a score of 668 and dropped to 663 in 2007.

The second biggest jump countywide was at Spring Grove School, which experienced a 46-point hike to 792.

Among high schools, San Benito High School increased from 675 to 703, while Anzar High School dropped 18 points to 709.

Each school also receives a statewide rank of 1-10, with 10 being the highest.

Two out of the six Hollister Elementary schools are over the 5 mark, with Ladd Lane Elementary having a 6 and Cerra Vista ranked with a 9. The other four schools either have a 3 or 1.

API scores are based on the school’s academic achievement based on the Standardized Testing and Reporting Program and the California High School Exit Examination. Areas that are covered are English-language arts, mathematics, science and history.

Nearly 37 percent of California elementary schools are at or above the target of 800, up two percent from 2006. Twenty-five percent of middle schools are at or above the target, up 1 percent from 2006. High schools in California have the lowest percentage – 15 percent – with an increase of one-percent from the previous year, according to a press release from the California Department of Education.
