Hollister police Sunday identified Shawn G. Bourdet as the suspect arrested after Saturday night’s illegal fireworks incident that resulted in injuries to five children, one in critical condition.
Police arrested Bourdet, 35, of Hollister, at about 10:30 p.m. following an incident that resulted in the five injuries. He was immediately arrested at the scene and accused of being the responsible party, according to a Hollister Police Department statement released Sunday shortly after noon.
According to the police statement:
The investigation revealed that a large morter, rocket launcher firework device had been set off on the street at a large block party. The device, once lit, fell over. The projectiles from the device hit several persons, including children, who were enjoying Independence Day activities outside of their homes.
At last count, five people were treated for injuries and went to the hospital for further treatment. Victims injuries spanned from a possible broken leg to several children with moderate to severe burns. One of the victims, a child was flown to a Bay Area hospital with severe injuries. There was also information that several other victims may have self transported to receive medical assistance.
“This incident is a grim reminder of the dangers of fireworks. Some of these children will be scarred for life. Please be responsible in your celebrations and call us with any information on those that possess and use illegal fireworks.” said Chief (David) Westrick
