Anzar’s Aaron Hsia-Coron ran an 8:38 at the 41st Annual Stevenson Cross Country Invitational Meet on Saturday, and led the Hawks varsity squad to a seventh-place overall finish at the 31-team event.
The Stevenson invite, which kicked off the 2008 season for Anzar, is a five-person relay event where each member of the team completes the course individually. The sophomore Hsia-Coron delivered the top time for Anzar on the 1.58-mile course.
The Hawks as a team compiled a time of 44:47, and finished third overall in the Small School Division, and first overall among other Division V schools.
“They looked good. I’m happy with it,” coach Doug MacKinnon said. “We’ve got some work to do, but I was happy with the results.”
Monterey and Gunn tied for first overall in 41:19, while Greenfield (44:33) and San Lorenzo Valley (43:10) – which finished overall in sixth and fifth place, respectively – placed second and first in the Small School Division.
“They beat us by a few yards at the finish,” MacKinnon said of Greenfield, “but I think that’s a good indication of how we’re doing. I think we’re doing okay.”
The Anzar girls team finished 17th overall in 68:54, seventh in their division, while two junior varsity boys teams finished 19th overall (49:30) 23rd overall (53:30).
Anzar will host a dual meet with Oakwood, Marina and Calvary Christian at Gavilan College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
