Anzar girls volleyball continue fast start, defeats Pacific

The Anzar girls volleyball team continued their fast start to the season on Tuesday when they swept by Pacific Collegiate in three games (25-18, 25-7, 25-22) and improved to 6-3 on the year.
Kerstin Tuning led with 29 assists and Erin Deleissegues supplied 14 kills and five aces. Alex Flores had seven kills, three aces and a block.
Anzar coach Chris Wardlaw said his team was without one of their outside hitters due to illness, and Ashley Homan helped fill the void with three kills and an ace.
“We were kind of using our two backups, which was good to get them some time,” Wardlaw said. “But we struggled to keep focus and energy.”
The match was ended on a high note, Wardlaw added, when Tuning set up Camille Merz for match point, and the Anzar sophomore “crushed it” for the kill.
Merz finished with three kills.
Anzar is off until their Mission Trail Athletic League opener on Sept. 23 at King City, although Wardlaw is looking to schedule one more preseason match sometime late next week.
