Lettuce donations help AAH

SALINAS – In mid- September a load of donated lettuce from Salinas was sold at Hunt’s Point in New York City, raising over $19,495 for Ag Against Hunger. Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Dole Fresh Vegetables, Ocean Mist Farms, The Nunes Company, Tanimura and Antle and D’Arrigo Brothers donated pallets of iceberg lettuce for this fundraiser, which benefits Ag Against Hunger’s fall and winter programs.

KLLM Transport Services based in Jackson, Mich., donated the freight cost and D’Arrigo Brothers of New York sold the product which was coordinated through Mark Sargent of S&S Marketing free of charge to benefit the Salinas-based non-profit that collects surplus produce and distributes it to local food banks.

Jeff Jones, president of the Board of Ag Against Hunger, says this event exemplifies the agricultural industry’s dedication to ending hunger in our community. “Our local grower-shippers are already committed to donating their surplus produce to Ag Against Hunger,” says Jones. “This event is one more way that they come together to help people in need by providing produce to raise necessary funds for Ag Against Hunger’s fall and winter programs and thereby help to feed millions in need during a time of year when food donations historically begin to drop.”

Ag Against Hunger is a non-profit agency providing fresh donated produce to food banks in the tri-county of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties, then statewide and out-of-state when the fresh produce needs of local food banks are satisfied. In the Monterey Bay area alone, approximately 20 percent of people live below the poverty level. Since 1990, area growers and shippers have donated more than145 million pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables to help feed the hungry. Learn more at www.agagainsthunger.org.
