Anzar’s Aaron Hsia-Coron sets 2.8-mile course record at Gavilan
College in 15:55 on Thursday
GILROY
Aaron Hsia-Coron set a course record at Gavilan College Thursday and led the Anzar High cross country team to a first-place finish over York in Gilroy.
The Hawks easily defeated York, 19-36, and finished the Coastal Athletic League season undefeated as a result. Coach Doug MacKinnon, as a reward, took the team to In and Out afterward for double cheeseburgers.
“That wouldn’t be good if they had them before (the race),” MacKinnon said.
With less than a week before the CAL Championships, the sophomore Hsia-Coron seems to peaking at just the right time. The Anzar harrier ran to a time of 15:55 on the 2.8-mile course at Gavilan College, which broke the previous record of 16:01 set by Hawk Francisco Heath in 2005.
“Hopefully, if we taper him right, he’ll get a nice time at CCS,” MacKinnon said. “That’s what we’re hoping for.”
Heath’s brother, Christian, is currently a member of Anzar, and he finished just behind Hsia-Coron in 16:13.
Armando Zepeda (16:49) and Jacob Wilkenson (16:52) rounded out the Hawks on Thursday.
York was unable to field a full girls team, and did not receive a team score, despite taking the top time of 21:01.
Anzar’s Brittany Romero finished third (22:48), Naomi Frenzel fourth (23:04), Lauren Bellone fifth (24:08) and Kelly Gomez crossed in seventh (27:34). Jessica Goodman took eighth for the Hawks in 27:35, and Cathy Chen ran to a 10th-place finish in 31:06.
The Hawks will now compete in the Coastal Athletic League Finals on Thursday at Toro Park in Salinas. Meet time is 2:30 p.m.
