San Benito beats Everett Alvarez 219-265, Alexis Sanchez cards

San Benito’s Alexis Sanchez delivered her best round of the season when she shot a 49 at the Salinas Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, and paced the Lady ‘Balers golf team to a 219-265 victory against Everett Alvarez.
Coach Chris Branon said Sanchez’ performance goes back to the fact that San Benito does not have a true No. 1 golfer, so in any given match, any given player could step up.
“She played very well,” Branon said. “She simplified the game.”
Sanchez’ 49 earned her medalist honors at the Salinas Golf and Country Club, where the two teams played on the par-36 front nine.
Yumi Kimura followed Sanchez with a 55 for the day, and Nicole Rianda and Jenny Glosser carded scores of 57 and 58, respectively. Jordan Davies recorded a 59, while Katie Moeller rounded out the team with a 61.
Eagle Reyanna Flores led Everett Alvarez with a 55 on the day, and was followed by teammates Rubi Galarza (68), Marissa Flores (68), Sonia Briseno (74), Barbara Shell (74) and Leticia Garcia-Romo (75).
The Lady ‘Balers will have one more home match on Monday when they’ll host Salinas at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club at 3 p.m. On Wednesday, San Benito will visit Gilroy in their final match of the regular season.
Branon confirmed that Tuesday’s match against Presentation at the Almaden Country Club was canceled in order to get more practice time in before the Tri-County Athletic League Finals, which are slated for Oct. 27 at the Salinas Golf and Country Club.
“We’re not practicing enough,” said Branon, who felt that the recent string of matches has taken away from some much-needed practice time, where players can focus on improving weaknesses within their game.
With the TCAL Finals played on 18 holes, Branon said that the Lady ‘Balers will be shooting for a team score of 390, which is the cut to qualify for the Central Coast Section Finals. The individual cut to qualify for CCS is 97.
“That’s the number we’re shooting for and I think we can do it,” Branon said. “I think it’s achievable. But we need to go back and hammer this down (in practice).”
Last year, San Benito shot a 391 and missed the cut by a single stroke.
The CCS Finals are scheduled for Nov. 3 at Corral De Tierra in Salinas.
