Fall means rodeos, and fair time
Whew, what a weekend we had! I’m sure glad it’s over! Many South
County residents had a busy weekend, and with the San Benito County
Fair opening this week, I’m sure everyone will be plenty the rest
of the week as well. At least the weather cooperated for us.

Whew, what a weekend we had! I’m sure glad it’s over! Many South County residents had a busy weekend, and with the San Benito County Fair opening this week, I’m sure everyone will be plenty the rest of the week as well. At least the weather cooperated for us.
Birthday wishes go out to Kasey Hurley and to Casey Bray who both celebrated birthdays over the weekend. Todd and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary over the weekend as well.
The San Benito County Fair kicked off the weekend with many of their horseshow events. The junior rodeo was held last Saturday at the fairgrounds while the ranch rodeo took place the following day on Sunday. Todd and Brody spent Saturday at the junior rodeo while Sierra and I headed to Salinas for a high school rodeo. Some of those competing at the junior rodeo included Taylor Jo Hurley, Kelsi Silva, Cheyenne Rey, Craig Slibsager, Brody Sans, DJ Parker, Bailee Nelson, April Flook, Tristan Schmidt and Ashley Hartwig.
Some of those enjoying the day at the ranch rodeo included: the Barrington Family, the Hurley Family, the Brewen Family, the Sans Family, the Sabin Family, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Wyatt Bourdett and Lacey Taliaferro, Stacey and Alex Schmidt, the Regan Family, the Skow Family, Danny and Kalie Cardoza, Blake and Jessika Willougby, Dick and Jeanie Coefield, John and Janel Flook, Jim and Kyle Lockett, George Lake, Billy and Dana Aviles, Brent Davis, Bret Bonfantini, Chance Jackson and Kent Hirdes. This was the first time the ranch rodeo was open to non-county residents and by doing so increased the number of entries substantially. Congratulations go out to Kent Hirdes for being the Open All-Around Champion and to Dina Cabral for winning the ladies All-Around. It was a great day and everyone had a fun time.
A calcutta was held the night before at the 19th Hole in Tres Pinos. Many people were there to participate in the Calcutta while Brent Davis auctioneered the event. Carlos and Shauna Castillo have done a great job with the place, if you haven’t been in there yet, be sure to stop by and check it out. They serve dinner Thursday-Sunday evenings and they do serve a great burger, one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time. They do have some good steaks and other good items on the menu as well. Be sure to stop by during the fair and say hi to Carlos and Shauna and to have a good dinner as well.
The San Benito Fair officially opens this Friday, but livestock events will begin on Wednesday. The PBR bull riding will take place on Thursday night while the carnival opens up on Friday. The livestock auction begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday and the Demolition Derby will close out the fair on Sunday. Be sure to check out the action at the PBR, we went last year and it was great. There were some great bulls, good rides and great entertainment with the extreme motocross bikes.
The King City Riding Club held its final event of the year last Sunday at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. Congratulations to Taylor Jo Hurley and Blair Strohn for tying for the Year End All-Around Championship title in their age group. The girls are good friends and they battled it out all year for the title and ended up tied at the end. Can’t get much better than that. Way to go girls.
Have a great week, don’t miss the action at the fair and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
