After losing to Carmel Tuesday, Anzar beats Gonzales in four
games Thursday
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

The Anzar Hawks couldn’t keep pace with Carmel earlier in the week, falling in three (8-25, 19-25, 15-2), but they managed a win of their own Thursday when they beat a visiting Gonzales team in four games (25-22, 15-25, 25-10, 25-23).

The Hawks are now 5-5 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 12-10 overall.

On Tuesday against Carmel, which sits in second place in the MTAL at 8-1, the Hawks had difficulty keeping pace with the Padres.

“We hit really, really poorly,” coach Chris Wardlaw said. “We hit a lot of balls out again and we tend to have that problem when we play good teams. We just hit out.”

Alex Flores had four kills, and Camille Merz and Nicole Seymour each contributed three kills apiece.

On Thursday, though, against a Gonzales team that currently has a 4-11 overall record, Anzar was able to rebound with a four-game win at home in San Juan Bautista.

“As you can tell by the scores, both teams were all over the place,” Wardlaw said of Thursday’s win against Gonzales. “Lots of positives, but at the same time, lots of the same old, same old problems.”

Erin Deleissegues had 15 kills, 38 digs and three aces to lead Anzar. Setter Kerstin Tuning contributed 32 assists, three kills and four aces, while Ashley Homan had six digs and was the team’s “Energizer bunny,” Wardlaw said.

Merz, at middle blocker, delivered a solid all-around night with six blocks and seven kills, and Cristina Medina had 14 digs.

“It was an okay game. Gonzales played pretty well,” Wardlaw said. “But I still think there are a lot of areas that we are still lacking in improvement. We just can’t get consistent.”

Anzar will play a pair on the road next week, and will start Tuesday at Soledad at 6 p.m.
