San Benito loses two games at Carmel tournament by two goals
CARMEL

The San Benito boys water polo team went 1-2 at the Padre Invitational in Carmel on Saturday, where they lost two games by narrow one-goal margins.

“It’s a little frustrating,” coach Tom Agan said. “… Just not putting them away.”

San Benito opened the tournament with a 7-6 overtime loss to Willow Glen, where Jordan Schafer had three goals and Josh Schafer added a pair. Nick Angulo supplied one.

The ‘Balers rallied in game two to defeat Stevenson 8-5. Eric Nicolaysen and brothers Schafer each pocketed two goals apiece. Matt McCullough and Ryan Whiteside each added a goal.

In their third game, though, San Benito lost 5-4 to Aptos. Jordan Schafer and Angulo each had two goals and Nicolaysen had one.

Goalie Kyle Reuther had eight saves in each game. Said Agan, “He’s doing a heckuva job in goal.”

The ‘Balers are now 8-8 overall. They will host Palma today, Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m., in Tri-County Athletic League action.

“That’s a very critical game,” Agan said.

San Benito is 5-1 in the TCAL.
