Condors post 2-0 shutout against Haybalers

Sometimes the first win is the toughest one to come by, and the San Benito boys soccer team remains in search of that first victory after it lost 2-0 to visiting North Monterey County on Thursday at home.
First-year coach Ramiro Ramos said earlier this week that the team needs to grow together and develop a chemistry as the season progresses.
On the field, Ramos is trying to build the ‘Balers from the defense up. He isn’t necessarily comfortable with his defense just yet, however, and implemented a 4-4-2 on Thursday against North County.
“I’m playing with two forwards only until I figure out my defense,” Ramos said.
Ramos used five defenders against Sobrato, including two stoppers. But after the Haybalers took a 1-0 lead late in the game, Ramos pushed the two stoppers up – one to the mid and one to the forward position – and the visiting Morgan Hill school pocketed two quick goals and a 2-1 win as a result.
“One of my concerns is how to sit on the backs,” said Ramos, regarding the defense. “The offense is there. But only until I’m comfortable with the defense will I start playing more offense with three forwards.”
North County (2-1) scored goals in each half on Thursday, holding on to just a 1-0 lead at the break.
Condor Luis Rodriguez put North County up in the first half with an unassisted goal, while Juan Chavez tacked on some insurance in the second half when he scored to put the Condors up 2-nil.
Meanwhile, the ‘Balers, which have been without a junior varsity coach this season, named Refugio Sanchez head coach of the JVs. Ramos said he’ll begin Monday.
San Benito (0-2) will most likely continue to focus on defense come Monday, though, as Pajaro Valley visits for a match at 3:30 p.m.
Pajaro Valley (1-0) is the defending CCS Division II champions, and compiled a 22-2-2 record last season.
