Police report that the victim of a drive-by shooting at Quick Stop Market on San Felipe Road retaliated by opening fire at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
Hollister police first responded to a report of shots fired at a moving vehicle at Quick Stop. Witnesses there told police that a Hispanic male in his late teens had fired several rounds from his car at a vehicle as it left the market.
As police were taking statements from the first call, another call came in from witnesses who, for unknown reasons, were following the victim’s vehicle from the previous shooting. The press release reads that: “The witnesses followed the victim’s vehicle to San Benito Street at which time the victim vehicle stopped and a passenger exited the vehicle and opened fire on the witnesses that were following them.”
The vehicle occupied by the witnesses was hit several times, but there were no injuries. A police officer who had been at the first shooting and was responding to the second observed the witnesses fleeing the scene in their vehicle. The officer, unaware that the fleeing people were not the shooters, stopped the vehicle and subsequently determined the occupants were the victims of the second shooting.
“The vehicle with the suspects in the second shooting fled the scene in an unknown direction,” according to the release, which adds that surveillance images and witness statements indicate that the shootings appear to be gang related.
Anyone with information regarding the shootings is asked to call Police Detective Jeff Caires or the WeTiP hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
