The Hollister Cardinals experienced their first playoff games in program history last Saturday, and two of the four teams will advance in the postseason to the NYFL Conference Championship this weekend.
The Rookies and the Varsity team will play Saturday at San Jose High Academy after each squad posted victories last weekend. The two teams will battle the Silicon Valley Tigers in the championship.
Last week the Rookies, which is made up of players 8- to 10-years-old, pushed past the San Jose Steelers and head coach Ted Nicolette was impressed with his team’s performance.
“They have worked so hard this season. I am proud of all of them,” Nicolette said. “Now we have to prepare to play again Saturday for game two.”
The varsity team, made up of 12- to 14-year-olds, won their game last Saturday as well.
“All season the varsity boys battled against each other; 24 of my 29 players had no football experience,” head coach Moe Fink said. “As of Saturday, they decided to play as a team and have one heart in which they successfully achieved their goal, together!”
Both Cardinal teams will play Saturday for the championship, with the Rookies kicking off at 11 a.m., and the Varsity starting at 3 p.m., at San Jose High Academy.
“These boys can handle any team, they just need to work together,” Fink said.
Additionally, the Cardinals will have 21 players, ranging in ages from 10- to 15-years-old, in the upcoming NYFL All-Star game on Nov. 15 in San Jose.
