HOLLISTER

The two newly elected members of the Hollister School District have returned from a school board conference in San Diego and say they are ready to face the daunting challenges facing education in the city over their elected terms.

“I’m excited,” says retired education administrator Rebecca G. Salinas. “I learned a lot at the conference where I realized just how big a responsibility this is.”

Salinas says she is eager to begin and is looking forward to the first meeting tonight where she will be sworn in and a new president and clerk will be appointed.

“I am proud to do this, and I believe I am ready,” summarized Salinas, “and I just want to thank the voters for their faith in me and their support.”

Dee Brown says she is ready to reconnect the community and the board and school employees.

“The biggest challenge we face is improving communication, ” she says. “People were calling me before I decided to run saying there is such a disconnect between the different groups.”

Brown says she wants to put the focus on “actions, not people,” and to stress that everyone involved is a public servant.

“It’s all about providing the best service to students with the available funds,” she summarizes, “and to do that the board must be responsive to messages from employees of the district, parents, and students.”

Tonight’s meeting is set for 5 p.m. at 2690 Cienega Road.
