Anzar’s Alyssa Rodriguez drops 17 points, pulls down 13 boards
en route to 37-34 win over Gonzales
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Alyssa Rodriguez had a double-double performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds, freshman Kelsey Robledo pulled down 18 boards, and the Anzar High girls basketball team narrowly defeated Gonzales 37-34 on Monday in San Juan Bautista.
It was Anzar’s first win of the season after having previously fallen to Carmel 45-36 on Nov. 19.
“I think we had more energy overall,” said Hawks head coach Aaron Netzel, whose squad held Gonzales to just six points combined in the second and fourth quarters. “We really did clamp down defensively.”
Anzar also got a boost from sophomore Allison Baker, who was recently called up from the junior varsity team. Playing in her first varsity game, Baker had seven points, six rebounds and nine blocks.
Freshman Sydnee Masuen added six points and three steals for the Hawks, which improve to 1-1 on the season.
“We’re still coming together. We’re not where we need to be just yet,” Netzel said. “But tonight was great. Defensively, it was great.”
Anzar will visit Monterey on Wednesday for a 7 p.m., tip-off.
