Hollister – Plans to move California’s 2008 primary election from June to February are gaining support from political leaders like Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. But the San Benito Board of Supervisors will consider opposing the move today.
Supporters of an early primary say it would increase the state’s relevance in presidential elections. However, Supervisor Pat Loe believes it could hurt local campaigns, because an early primary would reduce the time available for candidates to go out and meet their constituents.
“If they move it to February, then we’ll only have the month of January (to campaign),” Loe said.
She added that an early primary would mean that a victorious candidate might have to wait for nearly a year before taking office.
Loe was re-elected to her supervisorial seat in last year’s June primary.
The meeting will begin at 9:30am in the county administration building.
