Hawks allow five runs in final inning to drop heartbreaker to
Aztecs
The opportunity was there, but the Anzar baseball team couldn’t close out Soledad on Friday and dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision.

“This one hurt,” Hawks’ coach Andrew Barragan said.

Anzar took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but a bout with wildness cost it a chance at the victory.

Adrian Monroy, who entered the inning with well over 100 pitches thrown, walked the first two batters, hit a batter and walked another batter to force in a run before Barragan made a pitching change.

He brought in Massimo Marra-Biggs, who walked the first two batters to force two more runners in before recording a strikeout. A hit by pitch then tied the game and an infield single drove in the winning run.

“I’m a little frustrated, but on the flip side, our bats came alive for once,” Barragan said. “But it was just frustrating because of the way we lost.”

The Hawks scored twice in the second, getting an RBI fielder’s choice from Ryan Waller and having another run score on a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Austin McKinney doubled home Adam Gonzales and another McKinney double in the seventh plated two runs as Anzar took its four-run advantage.

“We had them,” Barragan said. “Adrian pitched a good game, he just ran out of gas. His arm was just as strong as it was in the first, his legs just started to go out.”
