Golf balls for the troops

HOLLISTER – The members and staff at Ridgemark Country Club, along with residents of the Ridgemark area have taken on a monumental project. They hope to send 50,000 golf balls to U.S. troops in Iraq.

According to Ridgemark General Manager Eric Dietz, hitting golf balls has become a popular way for the troops to blow off steam and get some recreation time in. But typically, balls can only be hit once, since they often land in areas that are mine fields or covered by enemy snipers.

Acushnet has supplied packaging for the balls, and Dietz and his staff are looking for a way to ship them to the front. The balls themselves are being collected in the golf shop at Ridgemark. Many come from residents who collect errant balls from their course side homes.

The effort will produce 174 packages of 288 balls each. Donors can sign a special thank-you card supplied by Ridgemark to indicate support for the troops.

The people behind the effort also need 174 supporters to help offset shipping, since each box will cost $35 to send via APO.

Checks may be made payable to RG&CC, and can be mailed or dropped off to: Eric Dietz, RG&CC, Inc., 3800 Airline Highway, Hollister, CA 95023.

“We appreciate your support of this important initiative,” Dietz said, “and look forward to the day that our troops will be playing the great game of golf back on their home turf.”

Donations will be accepted until July 4, and an event to thank supporters is also in the works, Dietz said.

Local artist’s show goes nationwide

HOLLISTER – Local artist and CMAP public access cable producer Shannon Grissom has been airing her show over a handful of Bay Area stations since 2003.

That’s all changed.

Last October, encouraged by a Pico Rivera station’s decision to air her show, Grissom began actively marketing to stations across the country. Stations in Manhattan, N.Y., Abuquerque, N.M. and Germantown, Tenn., snapped up the show. In a late March tour of Southern California Grissom pitched the show to 33 stations, and 23 of them have already promised to air the show.

“GiveYour Walls Some Soul” can now be seen on 32 stations nationwide.

Fremont Peak Day

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – For nearly a century, people have gathered on a spring day to mark the first raising of the American flag in California.

Capt. John C. Fremont of the U.S. Topographical Engineers ascended what was to become Fremont Peak and flew the colors in defiance of orders to leave.

This year, Fremont Peak Day will be observed Sunday, April 29 at the park atop Fremont Peak.

The public is invited to attend the free barbecue, festivities and games for all ages. Hosts for the day are Native Daughters of the Golden West and the San Juan post of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The state park staff cooperates by waiving admission fees for the day. The barbecue picnic should be ready by about 11 a.m.

People with limited mobility are asked to make arrangements for assistance in advance.

The flag will be raised atop the peak at noon as a bugle sounds. Speeches, water balloon and egg tosses and mounted riders are part of the day.

Further information is available from the San Juan Bautista Historical Society at 623-4904. Charles Clough’s book, “San Juan Bautista: The Town, The Mission and The Park” also describes the tradition.
