Hollister – The doors to AJ Sushi have been closed for more than a week, and downtown sushi lovers have noticed.
Eli Ahumada of Innovative Concrete Surfacing, who is giving the downtown eatery a new look, said he’s constantly asked when the restaurant will reopen. The wait will pay off on Friday, Ahumada said, when AJ starts serving up sushi again.
“It’s going to look brand new,” Ahumada said.
Ahumada said he and Eduardo Servin of Servin Landscape Design are making a number of small improvements to the restaurant’s interior, but the centerpiece of their work is a new floor. Past occupants of the building at 737 San Benito St. left the floor uneven, Ahumada said, with layers of brick, carpet, linoleum and tar. All of that has been dug out and replaced with concrete, with a brown polymer overlay to be placed on top.
Owner Eddy Chin said the remodeling is worth the $20,000 price tag.
“I don’t want people to fall on the floor,” he said.
California rec mall gets bigger, goes solar
For some business owners, building a mini-golf course might seem ambitious enough. But Sally Hayden said she’s just getting started.
Emblematic of Hayden’s plans is the park’s recent name change from the Family Golf Park to the California Recreation Mall. Hayden said that when she’s done, the mall will offer “35 different ways of moving your body at a modest price.”
Those dreams won’t be realized right away. In fact, Hayden said the recreation mall won’t even have its official grand opening until summer 2008.
“It’s not something that happened overnight,” she said. “It’s a long-term vision.”
But locals who want to enjoy a round of disc golf or take a swing at a baseball can get into the park a lot sooner. Hayden said new batting cages, a driving range and a disc golf course should open sometime next week.
And if all goes well, every activity will be powered by the sun. Hayden said she’s switching to solar power because of her commitment to protecting the environment.
“I’m a girl of the ’60s and ’70s,” she said.
The California Recreation Mall is located at 4000 San Felipe Road.
Sing and dance your heart out in Hollister
Jessica Smiley, owner of the newly rechristened West Coast Music and Dance FX, is expanding her offerings.
As its new name implies, the studio will add music classes to its schedule starting on June 18. Smiley said the initial offerings will include one-on-one voice, piano, guitar and drum lessons, as well as group “introduction to music” classes for young children and joint “parent-tot” music lessons.
“It’s ideal for parents with more than one child,” Smiley said. “You can have one kid taking a dance lesson and one kid taking piano.”
West Coast Music and Dance FX is located at 618 San Benito St.
