Salinas – The San Benito junior varsity baseball team used a strong effort Saturday from pitcher Wade Jacobsen and won the championship game of the Carmel Easter Tournament 8-2 over Salinas.

Jacobsen, who has two appearances at the varsity level this season when the Haybalers needed additional help during tournament play, pitched a complete game two-hitter, allowing only two balls to reach the outfield. He struck out 10 and allowed one walk.

Salinas took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, even though Jacobsen struck out the side. With runners at second and third and two outs, Jacobsen struck out the batter, but the ball got past the catcher and the runner advanced to first while a runner scored. With the next hitter up, another passed ball allowed a run to score but the ‘Balers threw out the runner on first attempting to go to third on the play to end the inning.

Jacobsen dominated the rest of the way, allowing only two base runners over the last four innings.

San Benito tied the game in the top of the fifth. Romero Chapa reached base on a fielder’s choice and Ricky Garcia drove in Chapa with a two-out triple. After Trevor Fabing walked, the ‘Balers executed a double steal, with Garcia scoring the tying run.

In the top of the sixth, San Benito took the lead for good, scoring five runs. Bret Furtado led off the inning with a walk, and Marcus Synegal followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Lance Villasenor came in to pinch hit for Jacobsen, and laid down a bunt for a base hit to load the bases.

Nick Acosta then hit the next pitch down the third base line for a double, scoring Furtado and Synegal. After a Ricky Archeletta walk loaded the bases again, Chapa hit an RBI single and then Garcia drove in Villasenor with a fielder’s choice.

Fabing grounded out to drive in Chapa with the last run of the inning and a 7-2 Baler lead. The ‘Balers added a run in the seventh when Furtado walked and scored on three passed ball.

Acosta and Synegal had two hits each for the ‘Balers, and Furtado scored two runs.

San Benito finished the tournament with a 5-0 record and ran its overall record to 19-1. The ‘Balers have a bye Wednesday and play Salinas again on Saturday in a Tri-County Athletic League contest.
