In a back and forth game, Alisal had the final surge and beat San Benito in five games to gain the edge in the Tri-County Athletic League boys volleyball race.

The Trojans won 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 19-25, 17-15 to improve to 8-3 in league play, equaling them with Seaside for second place in TCAL. The Haybalers fell to 7-4 in league action.

“I thought toward the end when we were ahead in the last game that we’d be able to pull it out,” San Benito coach Luis Espinoza said. “It just seemed that Alisal wanted it more. It was a hard loss because I knew how hard the guys worked in practice. It was tough to lose that fifth game.”

Sterling Wilson led San Benito with 13 kills and two blocks. Luis Rosales had a team-best 22 assists and recorded five aces. Erik Rodriguez had 10 kills and Chris Flippo had nine, while David De La Cruz added 16 digs and Chase Maka had six aces.

“Game 1 we had toward the ends, we just gave up the last few points,” Espinoza said. “In Game 2 we came back strong and we played the way we were supposed to play. In Game 3, I couldn’t pin point what went bad. It was the kind of game you want to forget because you know that your team can play better.”

San Benito plays at Palma at 6:30pm Thursday and closes the regular season next week with home games against Salinas and Monterey and still has hopes of making the Central Coast Section playoffs.

“We need some help in order to make CCS,” Espinoza said. “We need to win the last three in order to have a chance.”
