Our first Red Phone caller this week asked the Crimson Crusader if any local ordinances prevent downtown businesses from placing signs on the sidewalk.
Our hero made a call over to City Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless to find out. Chambless said city laws prohibit signs placed on the sidewalks in front of businesses, but admitted the ordinance has never been enforced in the downtown area. Furthermore, Chambless said, the coming revisions to Hollister’s zoning code will allow downtown merchants to put signs on the sidewalk.
That being said, Chambless said that if a particular sign is in the way or presents a danger to pedestrians, it should be directed to his attention. Call the city’s Code Enforcement Office at 636-4356.

Our next Red Phone inquiry concerns the Crimson Crusader’s new online question forum at www.freelancenews.com. Oh! Dearest readers, please don’t soil the Crimson Crusader’s web page with foul language.
Since one Internet user this week besmirched the Crimson Crusader’s online stomping ground, the Free Lance has been forced to alter its procedure for posting questions on the Web site. Red Phone on Hold
The last item on our hero’s agenda concerns the Crimson Crusader’s wager with Supervisor Anthony Botelho over the start of construction on the Highway 25 bypass. As keen readers will recall, the bet ended in a push, with both the Crusader and Botelho pledging to complete eight hours of community service.
Botelho has already finished his service hours, which included time spent at the Gavilan Kennel Club Dog Show at Bolado Park and preparing pancakes at the Aromas Grange, among other things. The Crusader has yet to begin. But fret not; our hero will make this community a better place one hour at a time over the next few weeks. Check back for updates.
