Hollister – The county’s transportation planning agency is moving forward with its planned budget of more than $42 million for 2007-2008.

Staffers at the San Benito County Council of Governments presented the agency’s board of directors with a proposed budget on Thursday. The budget is an increase of 11 percent from fiscal year 2006-2007.

San Juan Bautista City Councilman George Dias, who chairs the COG board, told the Free Lance that most of the budget hike is a standard accommodation for rising expenses.

“It’s a normal increase,” he said.

The only special addition is possible funding for a new COG office, he said. No new office has been approved, Dias said, but it’s included in the budget as a possibility.

The total 2006-2007 COG budget for services and supplies, which includes potentially increased rent, is $250,034. The agency’s largest projected expenditure for the coming year is $27.5 million for the Highway 25 bypass.

COG’s board of directors received the budget presentation without comment. The board will consider approving the budget at its meeting in June.
