Once a
Raiders fan
Saw George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon in front of the
historic Grauman’s Chinese Theater as they put their hand and
footprints in cement. Unlike the star ceremony this is really a big
deal as it only occurs once every two years or so. I have been
lucky as I also saw Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger being
cemented.

But my thrill this week was bumping into Jeffrey Jones at Pavilions (the name of Safeway here in the South) and when I went into Staples I said hello and chatted with Conchata Ferrell. These are the stars I really love, the character actors. Jones played the principal in “Ferris Bueller,” but he was more happy that I remembered him from “Amadeus.” Conchata plays Charlie Sheen’s housekeeper on “Two and a Half Men.” She, too, was happily surprised when I brought up some of her more obscure roles.
Someone in Hollister once asked me what the main difference between living in Hollywood and Hollister is. For me it’s that when I went to K&S in Hollister I knew everyone I was going to meet. Not that there is anything wrong to saying hello to Farmer Black and his semi-beautiful daughter but here in Hollywood I bump into character actors and their semi-beautiful daughters and/or sons as it is sometimes confusing. Aye chee waa waa!
I have a call in to the Fifty Cent Lance as I know they made a big mistake when they wrote that front-page story about the single rider car being built out at Corbin’s in Hollister. The story gushed like a paid infomercial but went south when it listed the owners as being the same ones who a few years ago went bankrupt developing the “Sparrow,” yet another single passenger car. In the process many local investors lost their hard earned money. So I know the Fifty Cent Lance didn’t mean these are the same owners with limited business acumen trying to get more investors. Hold it just a second; the phone just rang. What? They are the same owners who filed for bankruptcy and lost all that money from local San Benito County investors. Aye chee waa waa … what canacas!
How do I know there is going to be a Pirate 4? The marquee on a local theater lists two of the top movies playing there: “Pirates at World’s End” … “Knocked Up.”
Still don’t understand those crybaby workers in Oakdale where Hershey is closing its candy plant to move to Mexico. Don’t the American workers who have been so loyal for decades understand Hershey’s reasoning? Hershey spokesmen said they are laying off the American workers and practically destroying all their family financial resources because of “global supply chain transformation.” Now that should make the American workers feel better.
Saw Hollister’s “The Wild One” again for the 35th time and just love it when Marlon Brando says what Paris Hilton is probably now saying: “I don’t make no deals with no cops.” Words I have lived by and unlike Paris Hilton, I have never been disappointed.
Last week I wrote about the Chicago Bears’ No. 1 fan, Pat Loe the county supervisor extraordinaire from Hollister. But even Loe is not as fanatic as this guy who was on death row and just before his execution was asked if he had any final words. He shouted, “Go Raiders!” This guy was a loser in more ways than one. Aye chee waa waa!
As a native son of San Juan Bautista and part-time native daughter I love to sing the praises of Native Daughters of the Golden West, San Juan Bautista Parlor No. 179.
I was especially pleased with their helping Compassion Pregnancy Services with brand new baby clothes. Some of God’s little angels arrive on Earth without benefit of parents in wedlock. Most of the baby clothes given to Compassion Pregnancy Services are beautiful used clothing given with love. But Cece Johnston, the president of the Native Daughters, knows that wonderful glow new mothers get when they are given brand new clothes especially bought for their children.
Also, a special thanks to guys like Alfred Chacon over at Trust Realty on the corner of San Benito and Sixth. If more of us were like Alfred every baby would be as happy as I was as a baby, which carried over to all of my life.
I know what new clothes mean to people. I grew up wearing hand-me-downs. Unfortunately all my older siblings were girls.
