I Got Your Jug Right Here, Hollister

CALLER 1: I believe that Gilroy will have a better season than Hollister this year. The reason why is they play a tougher non-conference schedule, although Hollister does open up with Large School defending champion Milpitas. They play San Lorenzo Valley and Wilcox, whereas Gilroy plays Mountain View, Oak Grove and Serra.

The Gilroy junior class has lost two games in the last two years – one of them by forfeit. They are loaded with talent (and) I believe that this is their year. The Gilroy Mustangs have superior speed and talent and will definitely win the league this year and go to playoffs. I believe they are … going to bring the jug back down The Balsa to Gilroy, where it will stay for at least the next two years.

So, the legendary coach Chris Cameron – although legendary, sometimes arrogant – better start polishing that trophy or that jug because on Nov. 9, we will be coming down The Balsa to take the jug back to Gilroy. Don’t even bother driving down the Balsa for next year’s game, bro. We’ll see you in a few years. Enjoy the season.

GREEN PHONE: Attention San Benito, you just got served. The rivalry is reborn for yet another season and it appears one Gilroy fan is ready to take on a whole town. The Mustangs certainly look like they will be a better team than the 4-6 record it posted last year. GHS coach Rich Hammond has plenty of athletes to work with and a creative system to attack opponents. But, San Benito has bruisers of their own who believe they are the team to beat in the TCAL.

The last time Gilroy beat San Benito was 2001, and since neither team has won more than five years in a row since the the VFW trophy (Jug) was introduced in 1956, the odds say the Mustangs are due. The overall series record with the Jug involved is in favor of Hollister, 29-20, with one tie. The only year the game hasn’t been played during that span was 1967. Football is back, so let the smack talk begin. Gilroy fans, let us know if you have more to say. City of Hollister and San Benito fans – the ball is in your court.
