Hollister – The San Benito Lady ‘Balers beat the rain and the competition Tuesday, providing a 7-0 sweep of North Salinas en route to their 13th straight win of the season.

While plenty of previous matches for the Lady ‘Balers have been close, nail-biting matches, Tuesday’s shutout win was comfortable for the host San Benito squad at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

No. 1 singles player Amanda Marshall defeated Laura Sanchez 6-3, 6-3, which was the closest match of the day.

Lady ‘Baler Yumi Chang then upended Claudia Sanchez 6-2, 6-1, and Kaitlyn O’Keefe followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jenny Tijing. Abby Woods would round out the singles players when she beat North Salinas’ Jessica Deluna 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Elena Fata teamed up with Rachel Ademek to defeat Grace Franco and Betty Bernal 6-0, 6-0. Marisa Ibarra and Crystal Perreira continued the trend with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Melody Flicker and Renee Musgrove, while Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith and Jaclyn Roquemore did the same against Liz Torrez and Noemi Zuniga with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

San Benito remains undefeated on the year with a 9-0 record in the Tri-County Athletic League and a 13-0 record overall.

The Lady ‘Balers will travel to Salinas Thursday to take on Everett Alvarez at 3:30pm.

San Benito Girls Volleyball

Since a Sept. 11 loss to Carlmont, the San Benito Lady ‘Balers have rifled off eight straight wins, and Tuesday night’s win over North Salinas kept with the winning trend.

San Benito marched to a three-game victory against a visiting Vikings squad, who lost to the Lady ‘Balers rather convincingly 25-9, 25-9, 25-13.

“Our girls are playing really well,” coach Dean Askanas said. “They have some decent hitters, they just couldn’t get it going.”

Senior outside hitter Emily Kortsen had 14 kills, and Bri Romero, Shayna Nakata and Samantha Klauer all provided plenty of great digs, Askanas said. Justine Hunter also had a strong game, finding the right hitters at the right time.

“North Salinas wasn’t playing well, but we played with a lot of energy, which is good,” Askanas said.

San Benito is now 8-0 in the TCAL, 19-7 overall. They’ll play Everett Alvarez in Salinas on Thursday.

Anzar Girls Volleyball

San Juan Bautista – The Anzar Hawks put a stop to the Carmel Padres Tuesday in San Juan Bautista.

The Padres entered the contest as the hottest team in the Mission Trails Athletic League, said Anzar coach Chris Wardlaw, as they were winners of their last six matches in a row.

But similar to the previous match against Carmel, the Hawks defeated the Padres in five games 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 15-25, 15-12.

“It feels good to win this match. It went five (games), as usual,” Wardlaw joked, as Anzar has won an increasing amount of matches this season in five games. “Apparently, we’ve got their number.”

Kerstin Tuning had a career-high 40 assists and added three aces, and Christina Flores added 15 kills and seven blocks. Erin Deleissegues also had 15 kills and an ace, Jaclyn Wiley had 11 kills, three aces and two blocks, and Shealyn Bissell had her strongest game of the year, delivering seven kills and a block.

“She played great,” Wardlaw said. “It was kind of her coming-out party.”

Anzar (5-3 MTAL, 8-10 overall) will host Gonzales on Thursday in San Juan Bautista.
